Plastic surgery used to have a stigma attached to the process. Many people felt that plastic surgery was strictly for movie-stars and vain people who are trying desperately to remain young. Today this way of thinking is not nearly as prevalent. People realize that there are very compelling reasons for plastic surgery. Making the decision to undergo these procedures can be trying and emotional, but more and more men and women are utilizing this service to enhance their lives. Research has shown the main reasons people consider plastic surgery.

The top reasons people get cosmetic surgery are important to understand. The most prevalent motivation is for health reasons. Some people have gone through tough times caused by sickness or massive weight loss, so it is only natural that people want to correct the damage done by their illness. Also people want to fix problems that have caused health problems and many times surgery is the only option to fix any issues. In extreme issues, surgery is sometimes needed to survive.

Accidents account for a large portion of plastic surgeries. Car crashes, motorcycle incidents, sports or work related accidents account for the need to have plastic surgery for health or cosmetic reasons.

Self-esteem is a more nebulous reason but certainly not any less valid. If plastic surgery can enhance one’s self-esteem and create a better life for an individual, then most people deem this a viable motivation to have this surgery done.

Reconstructive surgery is almost self-evident as a necessary method to correct deformities on the face or body. These include physical birth defects like cleft palates and lips and ear deformities. Traumatic injuries from dog bites or burns are also sited as prevalent reasons for plastic surgery and breat cancer reconstructions have been very prevalent as well.

Finally, vanity is still a common reason for plastic surgery. Botox injections, face lifts, breast augmentations can be considered vanity procedures. Who are we to judge? This is a personal choice and if it contributes to a person’s self esteem, then so be it.
